CORTESE FOOT AND ANKLE CLINIC, P.C.

Ingrown, Deformed and Fungus Toenails
By: Carl J. Cortese, DPM, FACFAS

C02 laser surgery is the most advanced method used in Podiatry. With a beam of light, many foot problems can be corrected. In the hands of a qualified laser podiatrist, this light beam can replace the scalpel as a precise surgical tool that cuts only the defective or diseased tissue.

Because the laser allows the podiatrist to work with pinpoint precision, diseased tissue can be removed without damaging surrounding healthy tissue. The result is less trauma and less pain.

Postoperatively, there is less bleeding, swelling and scarring. Because the laser beam inherently creates a sterile environment, the chance of the postoperative infection is reduced. Thanks to the laser, many podiatric surgical procedures can be performed right in your podiatrist's office. Most patients are able to comfortably walk out shortly after using the surgery.

What is an ingrown toenail?

When a toenail is ingrown, the nail is curved downward and grows into the skin, usually at the sides of the nail. This "digging in" of the nail irritates the skin, often creating pain, redness, swelling and warmth in the toe. If an ingrown nail causes a break in the skin, bacteria may enter and cause pain and infection in the area, which is often marked by drainage and foul odor. However, even if the toe isn't painful, red, swollen, or warm, a nail that curves downward into the skin can progress into an infection.
